LACDR

The Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) is the research institute of Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The center was established in response to the increasing knowledge of drugs and their complex mechanisms of action, which necessitates the formation of specialized researchers and research teams. This is also reflected in the initial phase of the educational programs provided. In Leiden, this leads to a master’s degree in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences. The program aims to train experts, i.e., junior researchers, in the entire field of drug research. The introduction to research is closely intertwined with the work of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers during internships, while the latter also play a role in providing the initial phase education, especially in guiding students during the research internship in their final year. This fosters students’ orientation toward a potential career as a researcher. The education is provided by various sections of the center in collaboration. Other characteristics of LACDR:

  • Expertise in the entire field of drug research: from discovery, concept, and synthesis of therapeutic compounds to evaluating their effects in humans.
  • Collaboration with LUMC, VUMC, and CHDR in the field of translational drug research.
  • An integrated training program for PhD and postdoc researchers.
  • A strong international character, with many foreign PhD students and postdocs working at the institute.
  • Participation in ULLA, a European consortium of ‘Schools of Pharmacy,’ where alongside LACDR, the Schools of Pharmacy in London, Uppsala, Copenhagen, Paris, Parma, and Leuven also participate.

Extensive information about the activities of the center is included in the Progress Report, available at the LACDR office, University of Leiden, Gorlaeus Laboratories.
